How must it feel to be in the public eye every day and be scrutinized for your weight, your image, your smile, your hair, your clothes... To some degree, we all get scrutinized from passerby's and those around us. The only difference is, we don't often openly share those thoughts in a public format.
This morning, I was online checking out my daily "entertainment" news when I came across an article on Jessica Simpson. It was titled, "Jessica Simpson- Full-figured and finally Happy?" Pay close attention to that question mark at the end. I will cover that in a moment. First off, I find several things wrong with this title. Jessica Simpson is FAR from full-figured. This is the picture Holly McKay, news report and columnist from foxnews.com decided to use as her "full-figured" picture of Jessica:
When I went to save this picture onto my desktop so I could upload it onto this blog, the file was titled, "JS Curvy." I don't know about you, but do you see anything curvy about her with the exception of her chest? Jessica has always had a larger chest, even when she was svelte for her "Dukes of Hazard" movie. The rest of her is petite and gorgeous.
Secondly, let's get back to the "?" used in the title. Based on the title of this article, is Holly McKay implying that full-figured women can't be happy? If Jessica Simpson is the true depiction of full-figured women in America, well everyone over a size 4 then must clearly be depressed and teetering on suicide.
By the way... here is a picture of Holly McKay. She doesn't look much skinner then the picture of Jessica above. Perhaps she too is depressed and unhappy.
Moving on... Holly then continues by quoting a celebrity dietitian who states, "...celebrities, just like average Americans, need to take action not to get too comfortable and let those “love handles” get out-of-hand." Great correlation, Holly, because Jessica Simpson is so morbidly obese and the epitome of "love handle central." Holly continues by discussing the eating habits of Jessica's boyfriend and how he could save Jessica's life. She states, "...luckily for Simpson, her man...is known for his vegan lifestyle and nutritious diet." Wow, thank goodness her boyfriend came to the rescue before it was too late. Seriously?
Unfortunately, the weight criticism doesn't stop there. Halfway down the page, there was another story of Jessica titled, "Jess: Large and In Charge." I seriously think our media is so out of whack that they have to rip apart someone who is clearly healthy, fit, and confident. Just because she isn't a size "0" doesn't make her less of a person. She may not be the smartest bulb on the tree, but she has done a lot of good for those who are less fortunate. A lot! What has she ever done to deserve this cruel treatment?
In March of 2010, Jessica went on Oprah to discuss various rumors including rumors about her weight. She shared how badly it hurt to hear such horrible things about her weight gain and how people would see her in the airport and say, "Wow, you aren't nearly as big as they claim you are." She was amazed at how influential tabloids can be. That was one of the reasons behind her latest show, "Who We Are," which takes her around the world to find the true beauty in women from various cultures.
I think Jessica Simpson is beautiful and I hope she continues to fight back against her naysayers and stress the importance of self confidence.
