"Say say oh playmate..."

I woke up this morning to a loud crash in my bathroom.  Before getting out of bed to check it out, I slowly rolled over to look at my phone to see what time it was... 5:24AM. "Great," I said to myself.  "It looks like it's gonna be one of those days." I'll be honest, I wasn't completely taken off guard by the crash considering my cats turn my apartment into an Olympic race track between the hours of 5-7AM. But, I had been in the middle of a REM cycle and the last thing I wanted to do was check out the noise in the bathroom.

It's quite common in my home to wake up to loud thuds, blinds crashing against the sliding glass door and food dishes clanking.  Oh what my downstairs neighbor must think! Yikes.  My furry friends seem to enjoy my lethargicness (yes that is a word) while I desperately search for my water bottle in the wee hours of the morning.  And I think they secretly hide my water bottle when I'm not looking because I can never find it and if I can't find it...they don't get sprayed as often!

I've come to the conclusion that since I've been unsuccessful at turning my cats onto Australian time, I  need to learn to embrace their sleeping patterns.  If they keep me up during the evening hours, it is only fair that I get to squeeze their cheeks, play with their paws and snip their toe nails all while they sleep during the day.

My cat Linus, loves to sleep on his back with his paws stretched out way above his head.  He's like a human when he sleeps. You can pet him, fold him up, squeeze him and he'll just lay there. So, today while watching him sleep on his back, I started laughing because his paws were positioned like he was ready to play and sing, "Say say oh playmate." I haven't thought about that song let alone sing the lyrics since I was a little girl on a school bus.  So, I quickly started singing it to myself...okay, I sang it to Linus and amazingly, I remembered them! I think it goes something like this:

say, say, oh playmate,
Come out and play with me
And bring your dollies three
Climb up my apple tree

Shout down my rainbow

Into my cellar door
And we'll be jolly friends
Forever more more shut the door

Yes, it is okay to call me a nerd. I just find it amazing that after all these years, my brain can't remember important things like birthdays, deadlines or someone's name, but I can remember the lyrics to "Say say oh playmate."

  1. I don't think I've ever known all the words to that song so KUDOS for remembering it! And it may be a while before the kitties calm down. Razz and Whiskey will be 3 in April but they still whip around the house like a couple of horses between 5 and 9pm. But often times during the night when I open the door, they're laying RIGHT THERE, sleeping. Razz is usually leaning ON the door and Whiskey is right next to him by the railing. But at about 5:00/5:30am, Whiskey starts to cry and put his paw under the door as if to say, "wake up! wake up! we need treats!" So give them a year or two. They'll calm down. ha!

  2. I love hearing your cat stories. I wish I had one but I am never home. I also remember singing that song when I was little. You have a good memory because even when I was little, I don't think I always knew all the words so I just sang "la la la's" through it! hahaha
