Kristian and Rachel's Story

Today on Oprah, she shared a very touching story about a married couple in Australia whose names are, Rachel and Kristian.  These two met in college and immediately Kristian fell in love with Rachel.  He recalled how her smile lit up a room and he just knew one day he needed to marry her.

A few years later, Kristian and Rachel married and had 2 little boys.  Everything seemed to be perfect, until suddenly Kristian grew very ill and found out he had cancer, the really bad kind.  At 34 years old, Kristian is facing a terminal illness that will likely take his life, leaving his beautiful wife and two children without a husband and father.  Due to Kristian's chemo and radiation treatments, his doctor asked him to stop working.  His wife Rachel went back to work and is now the main source of income for the family.

Kristian shared how much his family means to him and how he is going through the painful treatments so one day his sons will know how important it was for their dad to be with them as long as he could.  On Rachel's last birthday, Kristian wrote the following on his blog.  Please read it. With help from some "close" friends, he also created the video in which you'll also see on his blog.

Kristian's Blog Entry

Kristian and Rachel's story is humbling.  Two young adults in the prime of their life, a beautiful family, and an unconditional love for one another, all being cut short due to a deadly disease.  It's not fair.  It truly is not.  Yet, it is through their story, we can all learn a valuable lesson which is to make the most out of every day we have been given and to not take for granted those we love the most.

  1. Please don't be so fast to put Kristian in the ground. He's not dying. He's doing very well, in fact.

Cancer is not always a death sentence. Do some research before spreading fear and doubt.

  2. I agree, "anonymous." There are many people who beat cancer day in and day out. I truly hope Kristian continues to respond well to his treatment. All of us can learn from his story and I don't think anyone is counting him out :) Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

  3. Statistics are now like 1 in 2 will have cancer in the year 2011 and 2012. I believe it's in our food or lack OF certain nutrients/vitamins from food. ANTIOXIDANTS ARE KEY! I was uanble to see the video though as I'm at work and it's blocked. (My work has a 'no fun' policy apparently) LOL! I'll have to watch it when I get home. People can be so inspiring can't they? It's a breath of fresh air when you get that new perspective :)

  4. Thanks so much for the touching story. I found it to be very inspiring. A nice, gentle touch on the shoulder to remind us to be thankful for what we've got. Too many times we don't realize what we've had until we've lost it. By the way, you do an excellent job blogging. First time reader but now a repeater. Love the photos and the breath of fresh air.

  5. That's a great story- Thanks for sharing. As you know, my father has been battling cancer for over 3 years now and like you said, we should really be making the most of our time here on this earth whether we have a terminal illness or not. Although there is always hope for my father's cancer to go into remission, he struggles every day with the reality of his condition. That is where my family and I come in. We are there for him on his good days, and also on the bad.
Thank you for spreading awareness to your readers through Kristian's story. It is so important to spread awareness. Also, thank you for all you've done to help me and my father through this difficult time. You are a true gem.
