Lately, I've been addicted to Subway's flatbread sandwiches. I love the bread mostly as the contents aren't anything fancy. I specifically like the breakfast flatbread sandwiches. You can get regular eggs or egg whites with your choice of cheese. They melt it in the oven and I then top it with onions and tomatoes. Delicious! I got hooked one day in February and for the entire month, I frequented Subway several times to take advantage of this delightful sandwich. The best part was that it was only $5.00. I would eat half and save the other half for lunch.
Well, last week I went into Subway to order my favorite sandwich, and much to my surprise, the same sandwich rang up at over $7.00! I was like, "Excuse me, Carlos..." (Yes, I know the employees by their names) "There must be a mistake. I ordered the egg flatbread sandwich. It is $5.00." He informed me that the sandwiches were only $5 in February, and now are back at full price. In that moment, it all started coming back to me... Visions of that annoying "Five Dollar Foot Long" commercial popped in my head. Thinking to myself I go, "Yes, I have seen that commercial on tv lately. And yes, every time I have walked into the store, they play the 'Five Dollar Foot Long' song. CRAP!" All the signs were there and I failed to notice them.
I paid for my overpriced egg sandwich and left scornfully.
Just for the record, when did Subway get so doggone expensive? I quickly added up what it would have cost me to convert my sandwich to a meal. It would have cost over $9! For Subway?
A couple days ago, I was at the grocery store (where I bought my Ziploc Steam bags) and I thought, "I can totally recreate that sandwich at a fraction of the cost." So, I went and bought some eggs, an onion, tomatoes, Swiss cheese, and bread. Unfortunately, the grocery store I was at didn't have the flatbread I would have liked to have used (Thanks Ralph's) so I bought whole wheat bagel thins.
This morning, I decided to test out my culinary skills and make my own egg sandwich. I started by scrambling 2 eggs:
Then, I chopped up some white onions and Roma tomatoes. I think I was supposed to use a red onion, but white onions have less sugar.
Next, I placed the eggs on a bagel thin and melted a slice of Swiss cheese on top.
Lastly, I placed the contents on top of the sandwich and cut it in half.
My overall thoughts: It was definitely tasty. I am not used to the bagel thins, and definitely miss the flat bread. However, the bagel things are definitely healthier and is not as filling as an entire bagel would be. The sandwich lacked a little bit of flavor, but again it could be do to the type of onion I used. I give my cost effective creation a solid B+.
I give this "article" a "funny" (because you are funny.), an "interesting" (because it was), and a "cool" because what you are doing is "cool." I want to say that you are your mother's daughter, but you deserve all the credit for creativity, not the other way around. On second thought, I'll take a little bit of it. (smile)
ReplyDeleteI think if you would have used red onion, it would have had more of a kick (there really isn't that much sugar in an onion to make a difference on any spectrum of a diet plan) :) They have lots of flavor! Try to sprinkle in some herbs when you make your eggs. Herbes de Provence is a pretty awesome spice to add. Try garlic powder too(if you like that). It's really good with eggs! and now I want eggs......
